Every day, women reach out to me when I share my own struggle of conflicted priorities between being a mother and being a successful independent career-driven woman.

My struggle started with feeling guilty about allowing myself to go after my ambitions while not being able to spend time with my kids and feeling like I was falling short in everything that I was supposed to do!

 I also felt like I am not able to be an engaged mum that I would love to be. Moreover, I could not excel at my work and was losing motivation. I also struggled to manage the house chores, and on top of all of that at the end of each day, I was getting exhausted beyond imagination. Whenever I share these experiences, the flood of responses I get from other women is, "OMG, Anum! Me too!"

 The problem is we all are experiencing and sharing the same struggle, but we have just accepted it as normal.

 Even worse, there really is no path that is laid out for us to easily follow. And this problem has been affecting so many of us! It blew my mind that nobody has stepped up to make a change!

 You see, balancing motherhood and work, trying to work through rigid corporate policies and a demanding job, and then juggling so many other things in life on top of it, makes life so much harder for mums and it is completely overlooked by the society.

 A recent study indicated that 43 percent of women leave careers after having children and 77% of working mums encounter negative or discriminatory treatment at workplace.

 After having kids our lives change ALL AT ONCE: 

 So many things take place at the same time such as fatigue, health challenges, changes in our body, changes in hormonal environment, social pressure, changes in priorities, and a huge increase in our responsibilities. Unfortunately, our work life usually does not cater to most of these changes. 

In fact, at work, we are expected to perform like we have no kids and at home we are expected to manage like we have no job.

 Because women are so resourceful, we often find ways and motivation to survive and cope up with such a demanding life. It costs us mental peace, mum guilt, stress, burn out, exhaustion and at times we forget who we used to be while wearing too many hats all at once.  

 I have spoken to thousands of women who spent years nurturing their career, investing their heart and soul into the work they were absolutely committed to doing and then had to leave it because they were torn between motherhood and their ambitions. At times, they feel a big void in their lives when it comes to their ambitions.

In some situations, they are working but feel that they are not really maximising their potential or are not getting paid what they are worth and possibly life becomes more like a struggle for them. In other cases, they are working part time or had to leave work altogether. Some women also find it harder to join the workplace after a long career break.

Isn’t juggling a career with motherhood, along with managing a million things on top the most challenging things in the world? Unfortunately, this struggle is so common that it has become a part and parcel of womanhood. Is this where I want to be? Am I happy? Do I even know what makes me happy?

2:00 AM. There I was, once again lying awake staring at the ceiling. We had become familiar acquaintances. You would think my brain was on repeat; surely, I was watching the return. I felt like I was living this scenario a couple of times a week. But this was nothing new. It was a recurring state that I experienced for years. I would push past it, getting by, going to work, spending time with family and friends, and experiencing some degree of joy in my life. But something deep inside just wouldn't let me rest. I knew was fighting a battle that I wasn't going to win, so I decided I needed to listen to that voice, but I didn't know how to get started.

From the outside looking in, I had a great life. People liked me, I was active in my community, and I had great relationships. My career was moving forward. I was employed at a startup; it was exciting to help build a company from the ground up. I had a good job & a stable income. I was being promoted. I was working hard and feeling confident in what I did but still something was missing I couldn't put my finger on it. Ever walk into a room and know that something used to be there that no longer is that's exactly how I felt I needed to figure out what was missing and where the heck it had gone.

A promotion showed that Jack Canfield, the co-author of the successful Chicken Soup of the Soul Series, were going to be a guest on today's episode of Super Soul Sunday.

I'd heard of Jack and purchased a few of his books over the years so I was intrigued by what he might have to share with Opera. Among many interesting things Jack discussed was the Passion Test. I thought, You mean there is a tool out there that I can use to home in on my passions and incorporate them more into my life? Well sign me Up! Like many people, I struggled with understanding what my passions were and how to incorporate them into my life. I struggled with barriers, and it was taking a toll on me. After taking the test, it was clear to me that my passions are the clues to my purpose in life. My passions are important to me, and I need to live what is important to me every day.
